Engagement Ring Shopping Guide: 12 Tips For What Actually Matters

1. Skip the trends.
Choose a ring she’ll love for decades, not just a season.  If everyone else has it, it's probably trendy.

2. Think outside the box.
Truly unique, well-designed rings never go out of style.  Her ring should match her vibe, now and always.  Find a jeweler who can help you navigate and isn't just trying to pitch you a 'good deal' or make a quick sale.

3. Size only matters... if it matters to you (or her).
Don’t let outside pressure dictate your priorities.  Bigger is usually never a wrong way to go, but there are exceptions to every rule.  Find out what she wants size-wise.

4. Be selective with advice.
Ask one or two people who really understand her style—like a close friend or sister. Too many opinions will muddy the waters.  This is about HER, not everyone else.

5. Design matters.
Don’t treat the setting as an afterthought—the design is what makes the ring truly special, and different design characteristics pair better with different lifestyles, occupations, or hobbies (yes, really!)

6. Going custom? Ask smart questions.
Find out where the designer trained, where the ring is actually made, and if you're working with the maker directly (think: not pulling parts from a catalog or existing styles and offsite in NYC). Avoid cookie-cutter "custom" made from pre-fab parts.  Ask if you'll get to weigh in on all the steps of the process, personally.

7. Do your homework.
Check Google Reviews and websites before choosing who to work with! Do a deep dive on websites, too.

8. No pressure, no gimmicks.
Steer clear of “today only” deals or “manager specials.” Quality jewelry doesn’t need a hard sell.  If it's made expertly in-house, chances are it's not marked enough to be discountable.
Think: priced directly off hours worked and materials used, not marked up commercial goods from another country.

9. Be cautious with financing.
High-interest plans can cost you more in the long run. Budget, ask about installment options, and shop rates if needed.  Often times, a bank loan is a better option than in-store options if you need financing.

10. Reputation beats warranty.
A great jeweler stands behind their work—no fine print needed. Normal wear-and-tear isn’t covered by anyone, so focus on finding someone who will do right by you.

11. Price ≠ quality.
A higher price tag doesn’t always mean a better ring, but a 'deal too good to be true' typically is.
Think: minimal gold, lower quality stones, and hollow styles that won't last a lifetime.  You must discern the middle ground— find someone who isn't relying solely on fancy 'designer' advertising to the masses, but don't look for a discount jeweler, either.
Trust your eye—and your gut.

12. You don’t have to shop local, but you should start there.
If you can't find the right fit nearby, work with someone experienced in remote design. Technology makes it easier than ever.  That said— finding a shop in person to check out (with your future fiancé) can help you get a good idea of what she likes and doesn't, and can help you find her ring size.
